Pa bletë s'ka jetë — Without bees, there is no life
The Philosophy
Bee Pilgrim was born from a lifetime spent listening to bees. Aglen Shehu has been a beekeeper since 2004 — not just tending hives, but studying bee biology, understanding their rhythms, and practising traditional apitherapy rooted in Albania's mountain heritage.
Every experience at Bee Pilgrim is guided by one belief: that bees hold something ancient and healing, and that the people who come here deserve to feel it — not just observe it.
“I don't show people bees. I introduce them to a world they forgot existed.”
— Aglen Shehu, Beekeeper
A Day with the Bee
The Journey Begins
Your pilgrimage begins the moment you leave the city. A 4x4 journey takes you past the medieval Petrela Castle and the ancient Illyrian fortress of Persqopi — through landscapes that most visitors to Albania never see. Approximately 90 minutes from central Tirana, the road itself is part of the experience.
4x4 transport · Scenic mountain route · ~90 min from Tirana
Meet the Colony
Suited up in beekeeper gear, you step into Aglen's world. He will teach you how to read a hive — spotting the queen, understanding how tens of thousands of bees organise their lives, and recognising the intelligence that has made bees essential to life on Earth for millions of years.
Full beekeeper gear provided · All guests complete a health & allergy form before approaching the bees
Breathe the Hive
A 20-minute inhalation session inside our custom wooden apitherapy house — where five live beehives warm the air with the natural essences of honey, propolis, beeswax and pollen. You breathe slowly. You feel the warmth. Something shifts. This is what people come back for.
Max 5 guests per session · Gentle, non-invasive · Health form required
Rest & Taste
Hay seats. Honey water. A glass of local rakia. A tasting of seasonal mountain honeys straight from the hive. Here you slow down, compare notes with your fellow pilgrims, and browse Aglen's handmade artisan products to take a piece of Bee Pilgrim home with you.

What Is Apitherapy?
Apitherapy is the ancient practice of using bee products — honey, propolis, beeswax, pollen, royal jelly and bee venom — for their natural wellness properties. Practised across cultures for thousands of years, it is today embraced by wellness seekers looking to reconnect with nature's most intelligent creatures.
At Bee Pilgrim, the centrepiece is our apitherapy house — a handcrafted wooden structure where five live beehives warm the interior air. As the bees work, they fill the space with a rich, aromatic microclimate of honey and propolis. Guests inhale this air slowly through a specially designed breathing device, in sessions of 20 minutes.
The experience is gentle, calm, and deeply unusual. Guests often describe leaving the session feeling lighter, clearer, and more present than they have in months.
Aglen's Story
I did not choose beekeeping. It chose me — through my mother, Lejla Shehu, who has dedicated over 30 years to Albanian beekeeping and served as Chairwoman of the Albanian Beekeepers Association. I grew up inside that world, learning the language of bees, feeling their rhythms, understanding their quiet intelligence.
What began as inheritance became a life's work. The apitherapy house at Bee Pilgrim — the heart of everything we offer — was built after winning a competitive business grant from GIZ, the German development organisation active in Albania, who recognised the potential of this project.
I am not a doctor and I make no medical promises. But I know what I have witnessed. And when I see guests step out of the apitherapy house with that particular look on their face — quiet, a little surprised, a little moved — I recognise something real is happening.
— Aglen Shehu, Beekeeper since 2004
Recognised & Supported
The Bee Pilgrim apitherapy house — the heart of every experience we offer — was built with the support of a competitive grant from GIZ, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit. Operating in Albania since 1988 on behalf of the German Government, GIZ evaluated Bee Pilgrim's business model and recognised its contribution to sustainable rural tourism and agricultural innovation in Albania.
Winning this grant was not a formality. It was a validation — by rigorous international standards — that what Aglen built here is real, credible, and worth investing in.

From the Hive
Every product at Bee Pilgrim is made by hand from Aglen's own hives — no intermediaries, no additives, no shortcuts. What you buy here is the direct result of 20+ years of dedication to the bee and its gifts.
Albanian mountain honey in multiple seasonal varieties — wildflower, forest, and thyme. Unfiltered, unpasteurised, alive.
Royal jelly rich in enzymes, vitamins and amino acids. Bee pollen collected from Albanian wildflowers — nature's most complete food.
Available raw or as a tincture. One of nature's most complex natural compounds — used by bees to protect and seal the hive.
Four variants — propolis, Basani flower, Aloe Vera, and pure base. All made with the family's own homemade virgin olive oil. No synthetic additives.
Handmade pure beeswax candles. They purify the air as they burn, releasing the warm, honeyed scent of the hive into your home.
Collected with care for therapeutic use. One of the most potent natural compounds produced by the hive, available on request.
Where to Find Us
End of September — End of May · Winter Location
Our winter home. The warmer climate and diverse winter flora make this the perfect refuge for the bees during the colder months. The route passes Petrela Castle and the ancient Illyrian fortress of Persqopi. 90 minutes from central Tirana by 4x4.
The bees shelter here through winter.
End of May — End of September · Summer Location
Our summer home. Nestled among chestnut forests whose blossoms produce one of Albania's most sought-after honeys — rich, dark, and celebrated for its health benefits. A scenic route with an optional waterfall stop. Local restaurants nearby for lunch.
